Staying Focused on the Majors in Our Faith

Just two weeks ago, we reminded ourselves not to get caught up in the minor details and lose sight of the major truths in our faith. This is especially crucial in today’s fast-paced world. So, what are the major themes we should keep at the forefront of our minds? Here are three key areas to focus on:

  1. Who is God?

  2. What is Salvation?

  3. Where do we fit in?

Let’s dive deeper into these important topics.

Understanding Our Faith

In Mark 13, Jesus speaks extensively about the End Times and His Second Coming. He does this to clarify His purpose during His First Coming, which centers on salvation and the restoration of the universe. The core message of the Gospel—salvation for humanity and the restoration of creation—is not just a message for the past; it resonates now and will continue to resonate forever. The Gospel is timeless Good News.

Jesus outlines a timetable that reflects the believer's journey: His First Coming, the Church Age, and His Second Coming. This timeline parallels our spiritual growth, moving from justification (the moment of salvation) to sanctification (ongoing growth in righteousness) and finally to glorification (eternity with God).

Who God Is

Now, let’s explore who God is, particularly in light of Mark 13 and eschatology. Understanding the Trinity is vital:

  • God the Father is patient, merciful, and just.

  • Jesus the Son has gone to prepare a place for us and will return for us, though He doesn’t know the exact hour of His return.

  • The Holy Spirit empowers the Church for its mission and restrains the Day of the Lord.

The distinct roles within the Godhead work harmoniously toward His ultimate plan. And what role do we play in this?

Our Role as the Church

As the Church, we are called to be aware, alert, and actively engaged in our mission. This message echoes throughout the Scriptures and is a crucial point that Jesus emphasizes.

Key Takeaways from Mark 13

As we read Mark 13:24-37, we encounter several significant themes:

  • The Days of Distress: These are times of unparalleled tribulation, far beyond historical events like 70 AD. This refers to the Great Tribulation, a time of significant turmoil.

  • The Second Coming: Jesus will return on the clouds, marking a cosmic shift and fulfilling prophetic promises.

  • The Gathering: This passage describes the gathering of believers, contrasting views on the Rapture, and the importance of being prepared.

  • The Fig Tree: Jesus uses the fig tree as an analogy for recognizing the signs of the times. It’s not just about when the Rapture will occur but about being aware of when the end is near.

  • Watchfulness: Jesus stresses the importance of being alert and prepared, likening His return to a thief in the night.

Applying the Message

So, how can we apply these truths to our lives in a way that deepens our faith, draws us closer to God, and helps us reach others? Here are some practical steps:

  1. Our Place: Recognize that the Church is entrusted to us. We are called to live according to Jesus’ teachings and to prepare for His return.

  2. Our Power: Remember that all authority has been given to Jesus. He empowers us through His Spirit to carry out His mission on Earth.

  3. Our Purpose: We have work to do. This includes seeking the lost and building one another up in faith.

  4. Our Perspective: Stay watchful. Live worthy of the calling you’ve received and remain engaged in the work of the Kingdom.

Conclusion

Let’s keep these major themes at the forefront of our minds as we navigate our faith journey. By focusing on who God is, understanding our salvation, and recognizing our role in the Church, we can remain steadfast in our mission and be prepared for the incredible future that awaits us.
